Washington & Old Dominion Trail

W&OD Trail Rules

Rules and Guidelines for safe shared use of the area trails

Right of Way

On trails, horses have the right of way, followed by pedestrians, runners and skaters.  Bicyclists yield to all other trail users.  However, groups of pedestrians should walk single file to allow bicyclists and others to pass.

(1) Horses

(2) Pedestrians

(3) Runners

(4) Skaters

(5) Bicyclists

When Passing

Pass other trail users on their left, leaving at least two feet of clearance.  Give an audible warning (such as "Passing on your left") as you approach, at least two seconds before passing.

Keep Music Down

Headphones should not be used at high volumes.

Watch Your Speed

Travel only at speeds that are safe and appropriate for trail conditions.  Safe and appropriate speeds will be lower in congested areas, where visibility is limited and around curves.

Watch Signs

Pay attention to all trail markings and safety signs.

When Stopping

Move off the trail pavement whenever you need to stop.

Riding in a Row

Bicyclists should ride single file.

Walking Pets

Keep pets on a short leash and under control at all times.  The best place for a pet is on the right shoulder of the trail, next to its owner.

No Motor Vehicles

Private motorized vehicles (except wheelchairs) are not permitted on the trails.

Beware of ICE

Trails are usually not cleared of snow and ice.  If you choose to use trails during winter, be alert for any snow or ice and exercise carefully.
