Recycle those old Phonebooks

Instead of throwing away old phonebooks with the trash, Loudoun County residents may easily recycle them and help save landfill space and reduce the number of trees cut down to make newpaper. Recycled phonebooks can be turned into new products such as home insulation and recycled paper.

The Loudoun County Office of Solid Waste Management encourages residents and businesses to deposit phonebooks at any of the eleven Recycling Drop-off Centers in the county.

New Vision Disposal

Normally, three (3) trucks are used to perform pickups.  (1) will pick up trash, (2) will pickup newspaper and cardboard, (3) other recyclables (i.e., plastics/glass).  If you see a truck pass your home and notice that something was not picked up, please wait until the end of the pickup today before calling in a missed pickup. It could mean that not all the trucks have picked up your street at that time.

Note to Townhome Areas

Because the townhome areas do not have trash toters, New Vision has been instructed to pickup  the townhome areas first to insure trash is picked up as early as possible in the day.

In addition, even though it is noted above that 3 trucks are used when making pickups - a homeowner in a townhome  neighborhood may see plastics/glass as well as newspaper picked up and placed together in the same truck.  The recycles from the townhomes may be taken to a different recycling center that separates the recycles.  If you see these materials being disposed of in the same truck - it does not mean the material is not being recycled.  Townhome neighborhoods are still expected to separate their recycles according to the guidelines regardless.  since it may not be possible for New Vision to always use the recycling center that separates materials.

Household Hazardous Waste (HHW)

Click here to see the 2008 Household Hazardous Waste Guide and Schedule

The first step to identifying HHW is to read the label and watch for the following warning words: Caution, Warning, Danger, Poison, Toxic, Flammable, Combustible, Explosive, Volatile or Corrosive. There may be handling warnings such as "Avoid Contact with Skin or Eyes," "Keep Away from Children" or "Strong Oxidizer."

Some examples are: oil-based paints, thinners and solvents; corrosives; insecticides, pesticides and herbicides; gasoline, kerosene and diesel; photographic chemicals, hobby and pool chemicals; and rechargeable batteries.  Also household cleaners and disinfectants; lighter fluid; some automotive car products; hobby chemicals and glues; moth balls; and wood preservatives. Call the office of Solid Waste Management for more information or click on the informational box.

Oil, Anti-Freeze, Auto Batteries

Motor Oil, Anti-Freeze and Automotive Batteries and propane gas cylinders can be recycled year round for free from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday through Saturday at the county landfill recycling center 20939 Evergreen Mills Road (Rt. 621) Leesburg, VA. Call 703-771-5500 for more information.

Please note:  The Merchants Tire & Auto Center located at 43320 Junction Plaza in Ashburn (behind the Giant Shopping Center), will except dead car batteries for a $10.00 disposal fee.  This is available for Ashburn Farm Residents only.

Recycling Rechargeable Batteries

Can you hear the Call2Recyle ™? It's the Rechargeable Battery Recycling Corporation's nationwide program to collect rechargeable batteries for recycling. It's easy to identify a rechargeable battery and to answer the call. There are four types of rechargeable batteries managed through the program: nickel-cadmium; nickel metal hydride; lithium ion, and small sealed lead weighing up to two pounds or one kilogram each.

Rechargeable batteries are easy to identify because they have an EPA-certified recycling seal. Typical rechargeable batteries are found in cordless electric products such as camcorders, cell phones, cordless phones, cordless power tools, digital cameras, laptop computers, and many remote-controlled toys. Rechargeable batteries and cell phones can be recycled at a variety of locations in Loudoun County. To find the site nearest you, or for more information about this program, visit www.call2recycle.org or call toll-free at 877-2-RECYCLE.

Alkaline batteries - typical flashlight batteries - are not recyclable. They can be disposed of with your household garbage. Large sealed lead acid batteries, such as car batteries, are recycled at the Loudoun County Solid Waste Management Facility and are not handled through this program either. The landfill is open Monday through Saturday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and is located at 20939 Evergreen Mills Road in Leesburg. More information about the landfill is available on the county government website at:

Ashburn Farm - Designated Pickups

Regular trash collection - Monday and Thursday
Yard waste  Recycling - Monday only
Recycling - Thursday only
Large Household items - Thursday only

New Vision will provide pick-up of trash and recyclables on all holidays that fall on regularly scheduled pick-up days, with the exception of Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day and New Year's Day.  When a designated pickup day falls on one of these three holidays - trash and recyclables will be picked up on the next regularly scheduled pickup day.

Do not put trash out on these holidays.

Trash is picked up twice per week - Mondays and Thursdays. Trash may NOT be put on the curb before 6 p.m. the night before pickup.  Trash pickup starts at 6:00 a.m. on Monday's and Thursday's.  Trash, yard debris, and recyclables in Townhome areas will be picked up as early as possible.

General Guidelines

Trash bags (containers or bundles) may NOT exceed 35 lbs or be longer than 4 feet in length each. Trash must be properly secured in tied plastic bags, standard trash cans or the New Vision 96-gallon, wheeled toters.

No liquids of any type will be picked up.

Construction materials (such as wood from removing decks or fencing) will be picked up by New Vision's without additional charge if put out in small amounts and spread across multiple pickup days.

Individual Large Household items, such as Furniture, washers, dryers, refrigerators, appliances, will not require prior arrangements and the pickup is free to Ashburn Farm Residents.  These items should be placed at the curb or designated areas for pickup (same timeframes as trash placed for pickup applies here also).   Items not placed on the curb will not be picked up/taken from the homeowner's property.  In addition, any refrigerators, washers, dryers, etc. that have doors - should have the doors removed before being placed outside for safety reasons. Any appliances that have Freon - must have the Freon removed prior to putting the item out for pickup.

Recyclables are picked up once a week (Thursdays) and must be separated from the normal household trash. (Accepted materials:  Glass bottles and jars (brown, green and clear); metal and aluminum cans; plastic bottles (milk, soda, juice, water and detergent); newspaper; including glossy inserts, flattened cardboard, magazines, catalogs, paper board, brown paper bags, white office paper including fax and computer paper.) These recycles can be mixed in one container - except for newspaper and cardboard. You will have to separate these two items from the other recyclables. Put your newspaper out in brown paper bags (do not use plastic bags) or use another recycle bin.  Be sure to remove the caps and lids from all bottles and jars. Rinse out any remaining food residue from those items as well as aluminum and metal cans.  Place in paper bags or use recycling bins-- -do not use plastic bags to store any recyclables.

Cardboard boxes will be recycled.  Small cardboard boxes such as cereal boxes, do not need to be broken down.  Larger boxes, (exceeding 2' by 2' should be broken down and be placed inside the recycling bin or bundled and tied with twine. Cardboard will be picked up with the recyclables on Thursday mornings.

Yard Debris:  All yard debris to be collected must be prepared accordingly and placed to the curb for collection. Brush and limbs must be cut into 4-foot lengths, bundled (arm-full size) with rope or twine and should not exceed 50 pounds. Grass clippings, leaves, and twigs can be placed in paper bags or must be in marked containers. Yard debris in plastic bags (clear or dark) will not be collected as recycling. Tree stumps and tree limbs should not be larger than 6 inches in diameter and 4 feet in length.  As with normal trash pickups, yard debris must also be at the curb or designated site by 6:00 a.m. the morning of pickup.

Yard Debris is picked up for recycling from the month of April thru the second week in January.  Starting the third week in January, if you have yard debris for recycling - you will need to notify New Vision Trash to have it picked up.  Since there is very little yard debris during the winter months, it is not cost effective to have trucks deployed to search the community, therefore, notification is required.  (All yard debris for recycling must be in brown paper bags or separate containers marked for this purpose only).

Christmas trees will be collected separately   All tinsel and ornaments must be removed from the tree and trees in excess of 8 feet in length need to be cut in half.  Christmas trees should be free of all decorations, lights, wire, stand, plastic bagging and any netting.  Christmas trees should be placed outside for pickup on December 31st or January 7th for recycling.   Click here for a location Guide, distributed by Loudoun County on drop-off locations for Christmas Tree recycling also.

Latex or water-based paints are not a hazardous waste and if completed dried, can be placed out with trash. Dry or solidify the leftover latex paint before disposing with your household trash.

When pick-up is delayed by weather events, a pick-up will be made as soon as weather permits. Whenever possible, an announcement will be placed on this website on this page and/or "Community News Briefs".

Trash Containers (this includes any trash containers purchased by the homeowner) are to be removed and stored out of sight at the earliest opportunity the same day as trash/recycling pickup.  Trash containers cannot be stored on any Ashburn Farm common area property, which is any area outside of the resident's private property. Trash containers found on common areas the day after a scheduled trash pickup date may be confiscated by the Association office.

At no time will New Vision pickup:  Flammable products, tires, dead animals, manure, or hazardous waste materials.
