Loudoun County, Virginia- The Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office will hold four weeklong summer camps to keep kids from joining gangs.

LCSO Announces Dates for Summer Road DAWG Camp

The camp, called Road DAWG (Don’t Associate with Gangs), is part of the Gang Resistance Education and Training (G.R.E.A.T.) program and will be held June 23 - June 27 (Sterling Middle School), July 7- July 11 (Seneca Ridge Middle School), July 21- July 25 (Stone Hill Middle School), and July 28 - August 1 (Round Hill Elementary School). The camps are for upcoming sixth graders and space is limited. The camp is designed to provide students with the skills they need to avoid gang pressure and youth violence.

If you are interested in the camps, please ask for an application at your local elementary school or pick-up an application at the Loudoun Sheriff’s Office Administration Building, located at 39 Catoctin Circle, SE, Leesburg, VA.

The curriculum for G.R.E.A.T. was designed for middle school entry-level students in 6th or 7th grade. Taught in the classroom by specially trained Loudoun Sheriff School Resource Officers, G.R.E.A.T.'s violence prevention curriculum is a life-skills competency program designed to provide students with the skills they need to avoid gang pressure and youth violence.

LCSO Warns of Economic Stimulus Package Scams thru E-mails and Telphone Calls

The Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office is asking residents to be wary of telephone calls and e-mails about the economic stimulus package.

The Loudoun Sheriff’s Office has learned that some county residents have received an e-mail claiming to be from the IRS. The e-mail states that you are qualified to receive the 2008 Economic Stimulus Refund. It then asks you to click on a link to fill out a form, apparently for direct deposit into the scammers bank account. There are no reports of victims of this scam in Loudoun County.

The e-mail, according to the IRS, appears to be an identity theft scheme to obtain recipients’ personal and financial information so the scammers can clean out the victims’ financial accounts. The IRS states taxpayers do not have to fill out a separate form to get a stimulus payment or have it directly deposited.

Remember the IRS will never call you to ask for your Social Security number or bank account information or an e-mail you to ask for Social Security or bank account information.

If you believe you were a victim of this scam, you are asked to contact the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office at 703-777-1021 to report the incident.

Alert - Be Aware  Notice!

Loudoun County, Virginia- The Sheriff’s Office is asking residents to be wary of workers going door to door in neighborhoods offering to resurface driveways, work on roofs or complete other work “for great prices.”

The workers, sometimes referred to as Travelers, will complete the work and then request payment that is substantially higher then what was originally quoted. They will often use intimidation on the victims to get their money. The Travelers may also use another method, burglarizing a home and stealing cash, jewelry and/or silver

The Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Unit recently received information that a group of travelers may be in the area. The agency has yet to receive any recent reports of these types of scams this year.

If you think you may have been a victim of the Travelers or if you have any information regarding the group, please call Investigator T. Ortwein of the Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division at 703-777-0475.
