Level of Volunteer Involvement

Core Team

Attend the monthly neighborhood watch meetings.  Volunteer for special projects addressing and implementing resolutions to problems areas, including suggestions made by homeowners, etc.  In addition, help get alerts out to homeowners in Ashburn Farm by email, flyers, etc.  Core team members vote on issues relating to the Neighborhood Watch Program in Ashburn Farm.  Core members are automatically added to the Neighborhood Watch email alert.

Passive Observation

Exercise your Eyes and Ears

Simply observe what goes on around your neighborhood.  If something does not look right, call your neighbor, the Sheriff's  non-emergency number at 703-777-1021, or call 911 depending on your perception of the situation.  Maintain a phone tree or email list so that non-emergency information can be quickly relayed to your neighbors.

Sign up for the Neighborhood Watch email alerts!  In addition, you can sign up to be a Block Captain and share neighborhood watch alerts and information with your neighbors.  See below.

Walking Patrol

Walk or Bike Patrol with a friend or another Neighborhood Watch Member

These patrols should be done in pairs, equipped with a cell phone, during periods when crime is likely to occur. Your morning or evening walks could be your way of helping. Report anything suspicious.  Neighborhood Watch will keep you aware of concerns in your neighborhood, you can be on the lookout for these types of things.  You should alert the Sheriff's Office by calling the non-emergency number or if you feel it is an emergency 911.  Contact the Neighborhood Watch Committee with the street names you plan to patrol when you join.  In addition, an orange vest will be provided (as long as we have them in stock) to those who plan on doing walking patrols.  You do not have to sign up for specific dates or times.  We ask that all patrols keep a log of their hours put in on patrol.

Mobile Patrol

Drive through your neighborhood with another Neighborhood Watch member

Although not for everyone, mobile patrols would quickly enable a team of members to cover the entire community in a short period of time.  Mobile patrols are particularly effective during periods when crimes are most likely to occur.  The goal is to report by cell phone any suspicious or criminal activity to the Sheriff's office.  (Members should not intervene, but to report the activity to the authorities.)

If you would like to sign up for Mobil Patrols, you should obtain a car magnet to identify your personal vehicle while performing these patrols. A waiver should be signed and can be obtained at any Neighborhood Watch meeting.
