Basketball Goals


Permanent basketball goals will be considered under the following conditions:

 

The homeowner is responsible for maintaining basketball play on homeowner’s lot only and is responsible for preventing errant shots from trespassing onto a neighboring driveway or property.

 

Fixed and portable basketball goals must be properly maintained and located in such a manner as to minimize the impact on adjacent lots.

 

  • Permanent basketball goals require ARB approval and will only be considered and reviewed for goals on private lots. 

  • Free standing or permanent basketball poles should be painted to blend with the natural surrounding, or, if located adjacent to a dwelling or fence, painted to match the background or screening structure.

  • Basketball backboards may be located and centered over the garage door on houses.  Backboards attached to houses or garages should be clear or of a color to blend with the background.  A contrasting, rectangular outline may be painted on the backboard behind the goal.

  • Site Plan showing the relationship of the permanent basketball goal to the house; property line and adjacent properties.  A first and second location choice must be presented

Portable basketball goals do not require an application.

  • Portable basketball goals located in the front yard must be along the edge of the driveway and on the homeowner’s lot and outside of the VDOT right-of-way. 

  • Properties with curbs and sidewalks – portable basketball backboards must be placed between sidewalk and house structure.

  • Properties with curbs without sidewalks - portable basketball backboards must be placed no closer than 10 feet from curb.

  • Properties without curbs and sidewalks - portable basketball backboards must be placed no closer than 10 feet from the edge of pavement.

  • Portable basketball goals must be used and stored solely on the homeowner’s lot.  At no time should portable basketball goals be placed in the street.

  • Portable Basketball goals are not allowed in townhome parking spaces or parking lots. 

Note:  The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) prohibits the placement of portable basketball goals within the public street right-of-way, which encompasses the street and the area approximately ten (10) feet beyond the street curb.
